On Tuesday, January 5, the Government of Italy deposited its instrument of ratification, thereby becoming the 127th Party to the Minamata Convention and the first country to join in the new year 2021.
Weeks earlier on December 16, 2020, the Government of Pakistan deposited its instrument of ratification, thus becoming the 126th Party to the Minamata Convention.
On November 4, 2020, the Government of the State of Qatar had deposited its instrument of accession, thereby becoming the 125th Party to the Minamata Convention.
Previously on October 5, 2020, the Government of the Republic of Tanzania deposited its instrument of ratificacion, to become the 124th Party to the Convention.
On July 8, 2020, the Government of the Philippines deposited its instrument of ratificacion, thus becoming the 123rd Party to the mercury Convention.
On June 23, 2020, the Government of the Sultanate of Oman deposited its instrument of accession, thereby becoming the 122nd Party to the Convention.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury (“Minamata Convention”) is an international environmental convention for global community to work collaboratively against mercury pollution. It aims at achieving environmentally sound mercury management throughout its life cycle. The Convention was adopted at the diplomatic conferences held in Minamata City and Kumamoto City in October 2013.
The mercury accord entered into force on Thursday, May 18, 2017 after having garnered the required 50 ratifications.
Nigeria on Thursday, February 1, 2018 deposited its instrument of ratification, thereby becoming the 88th Party to the Convention.
