The Director, Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Nnimmo Bassey, has been told by a faction of the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (FoEN) headed by Dr Godwin Uyi Ojo, that he lacks the power to convene and address a meeting of the ERA Board Staff Meeting,
Barr. Nosa Tokunbor, the ERA legal officer, who made the submission in a press statement in Benin City, Edo State, on Friday, October 9, 2020, said that the purported ERA/FoEN Board Staff Meeting being organised for staff of the organisation is illegal, and of no effect whatsoever.
According to him, Mr Bassey was on Wednesday October 7, 2020 removed as trustee and as chairman, Board of Trustees of the organisation by the General Assembly meeting resolution of ERA/FoEN.
“Mr Nnimmo Bassey has been duly and lawfully removed as the chairman of the Board of Trustees and therefore lacks the power, authority or capability to convene any Board Staff Meeting.
“Mr Nnimmo Bassey was removed because of the lingering irreconcilable conflict of interest and therefore cannot perform such function,” said Mr Tokunbo.
Therefore, Mr Tokunbo called on all staff of ERA/FoEN not to attend “such meeting called by the former chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr Nnimmo Bassey, as it is illegal”.
Mr. Bassey has however said that he remains a member and also the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the organisation, and actions taken and decisions arrived at by ERA/FoEN under Dr Ojo are illegal because he (Ojo) had already been disengaged as Executive Director as well as Director of ERA/FoEN.
