They spoke at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) Renewable Energy event with the theme: “Renewable Energy: Innovation, Transition, Opportunities, and Challenges” on Thursday, August 24, 2023, in Lagos.

Mr Ralph Gbobo, Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Gas, said the theme of the event underscored the transformative journey that the energy sector was undergoing globally.

Gbobo emphasised the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to address the challenges posed by climate change and to create sustainable energy systems for the future.

According to him, there is the need to create a more sustainable future which include the exploration, development and utilisation of renewable energy sources.

This, he noted, had become essential components of Nigeria’s energy landscape.

“In pursuit of a more sustainable future, innovation play a vital role in transforming how we produce energy.

“By fostering new technologies, business models and ideas, we can build the way for positive change.

“Collaborating with the private sector, government agencies and academia is essential to overcome the challenges we face in transition to renewable energy,” he said.

The managing director said gas remains transition fuel as the country moves towards the renewable era.

He, however, said that Nigeria must recognise also the obstacles ahead on the country’s journey to renewable energy future.

“Recognising the importance of gas enables us to strategically plan and implement solutions that align with our commitment to a sustainable future.

“This is by harnessing the potential of gas as a transition fuel and pave way for a greener energy landscape.

“At Shell Nigeria Gas, we recognise the responsibility we have in leading the charge towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

“We are committed to bridging the energy gap by providing manufacturing and industrial customers with clean reliable low-cost alternatives to liquid fuel.

“Shell Nigeria Gas currently supplies gas to about 150 manufacturers and industrial customers and our heartlands includes Abia, Ogun and Rivers states and an ongoing expansion into Bayelsa state.

“Together we can explore innovative solutions, identify emerging opportunities and ensure a successful transition to a more sustainable energy future,” he said.

Mr Ray Atelly, President, NBCC, said the focus on renewable energy had taken centre stage like never before.

Atelly said the event’s theme resonated deeply with the current global context whereby the transition towards renewable energy sources was no longer a choice but a necessity.

“As we confront environmental challenges and endeavour to meet the energy needs of a growing population, this transition opens up a world of possibilities.

“Our discussions throughout the day will delve into the intricacies of innovation, the dynamics of transition, the array of opportunities, and the challenges we must collectively address,” he said.

Mrs Folake Soetan, Chief Executive Officer, Ikeja Electric, said opportunities in renewable energy was quite vast and held tremendous potential both economically and environmentally.

Soetan stated that Nigeria’s real energy potentials showed the availability of abundant resources to drive renewable energy generation.

She revealed that the electricity distribution company in recognition of the potential of renewable technology was actively exploring partnership with the Lagos State government to bring energy to life responsibility.

“We are partnering with renewable energy sector experts and World Bank to scale up renewable energy projects in Lagos.

“We are also committed to encouraging entrepreneurs to leverage technology to bring the goals and objectives to clean energy to life.

“However, the right type of policies to attract investments in that sector is critical and so there’s need for continuous collaboration between relevant stakeholders,” she said.
