Govt predicts heavy rainfall, floods in 73 communities

Some 72 communities in 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding from September 8 to 12, 2023, government has predicted.

The Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Central Hub, Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja, listed the states and communities to include:

  • Kaduna State: Kauru, Saminaka
  • Kano State: Kunchi
  • Kebbi State: Argungu, Kamba, Jega, Yelwa
  • Katsina State: Bakori, Daura, Funtua, Katsina
  • Niger State: Sarkin-Pawa, Bida, Ibi, Katcha, Kontagora, Mashegu, Mokwa, New Bussa, Suleja
  • Benue State: Otukpo, Ugbokpo
  • Kwara State: Kaiama, Lafiaji, Kosubosu, Wara, Jebba
  • Oyo State: Kisi
  • FCT: Abaji, Abuja CBD, Asokoro, Bwari, Garki 1&2, Guzape, Gwagwalada, Gwarinpa, Karu, Kuje, Kukwaba, Kurudu, Kwali, Lugbe, Mabushi, Maitama, Wuse 1& 2
  • Kogi State: Abejukolo, Oguma
  • Zamfara State: Anka, Bungudu, Gusau
  • Bauchi State: Bajoga, Darazo, Kirfi
  • Taraba State: Beli, Donga, Gembu, Serti, Takum
  • Plateau State: Bokkos, Mangu, Shendam
  • Borno State: Briyel
  • Sokoto State: Gada, Goronyo, Isa
  • Adamawa State: Ganye, Mubi
  • Cross River State: Ikom, Itigidi
  • Nasarawa State: Keffi
  • Oyo State: Kisi
  • Gombe State: Nafada
  • Enugu State: Nsukka.

The Ministry added that, due to the rise in the water level of River Benue and River Niger, communities along River Benue and River Niger up to Bayelsa State should take precautionary measures.
