An NGO, Green Planet Conservation Initiative, has sensitised secondary school students in Plateau State on the significance of tree planting toward addressing global warming.
Mr Edward Obiozor, the Executive Director of the organisation, who disclosed this in an interview on Sunday, January 28, 2024, in Jos, the state capital, said that the students were drawn from six public secondary schools across the state.
He explained that the initiatives aimed at tackling the rising dangers posed by global warming.
“Climate change has become a concern around the globe, unfortunately, most adults don’t take these concerns seriously.
“Our vision is to create a sustainable future for generations to come by promoting tree planting and school campaigns on climate change.
“We believe that by planting trees, we can help to mitigate the effects of climate change and create a more sustainable environment.
“We also believe that by raising awareness about environmental conservation through school campaigns, we can inspire young people to take action and make a positive impact on the world,” he said.
Obiozor, who explained that his organisation planned to visit more schools within the state, promised to plant one million trees in the Northern part of Nigeria by 2030.
The executive director explained that his organisation was using the school tree planting campaign to create more awareness on the dangers posed by climate change on the environment.
Obiozor, who decried the rise in deforestation in Nigeria, advised Plateau residents and Nigerians in general to regularly plant trees to save the environment.
