A climate activist group, Last Generation, on Friday, September 22, 2023, vowed to disrupt the upcoming Berlin Marathon scheduled for Sunday in the German capital.
“There seems to be lack of clarity about this. Yes, we are interrupting the Berlin Marathon.
“We cannot run away from the climate catastrophe,’’ Last Generation said on Friday in a press release.
The group provided no further details and did not immediately respond to inquiries from dpa.
Last Generation has attracted widespread attention and frequent criticisms for its disruptive protest tactics.
The activists with the group routinely blocked traffic, sometimes gluing themselves to the pavement.
They have also pulled off other actions.
Earlier this week, the activists sprayed Berlin’s landmark Brandenburg Gate with orange paint.
On Thursday, Berlin Mayor, Kai Wegner, said that residents of Berlin were fed up with the climate activists, adding that he would take a tough stance toward illegal demonstrations.
Berlin Marathon is considered one of the world’s premier long-distance running races.
Entrants this year include Kenyan star marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, who set the marathon world record last year in Berlin.
