Concerns have trailed of the gas explosion tragedy that has claimed the lives of three people and injured at least 270 others in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The incident was reportedly triggered by the explosion of a vehicle loaded with gas cylinders, which resulted in a fire that engulfed homes and warehouses in a section of Nairobi’s Embakasi area.
While extending its sympathies to those affected and recognising efforts by government and humanitarian agencies to provide assistance to the victims, 350Africa.org stated that incidents such as these serve as a stark reminder of the risks posed by fossil fuels extraction, exploitation and transportation.
“They also underscore the urgent need for a shift to safe and sustainable renewable energy alternatives,” emphasised the group.

For too long, we have witnessed the destructive impacts of fossil fuels on both human lives and the environment. From oil spills to gas explosions, incidents such as these are painful reminders of the inherent risks associated with our reliance on fossil fuels. In addition, fossil fuels exacerbate the climate crisis, leading to more frequent and severe extreme weather events that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities across the African continent.
“We call upon governments and policymakers to prioritise the deployment of renewable energy solutions that will not only mitigate the risk of future disasters but also foster a sustainable and equitable future for all. In the aftermath of this tragic incident, we must intensify efforts to accelerate the transition towards a renewable energy future for the sake of the well-being of our communities and our planet.”
