The Rotary Club planted trees at the Air Force Military School, Jos, on Saturday, August 6, 2022, to mitigate global warming and control soil erosion.
The club’s Jos president, Mrs Josephine Azoba, said the initiative was in line with Rotary International’s seven areas of focus.
She noted that the depletion of the ozone layer had resulted in increased heat globally just as erosion was posing a threat to the environment.
She said also that the trees would serve as windbreakers to protect the school’s infrastructure.
“We intend to secure the future with the theme of this year’s tree planting, which is: ‘Plant a tree and plant a future’.”
“We chose Air Force Military School because it is a well organised school and we believe it will help us to nurture the trees to grow.
“The trees would be allocated to students to take care of and make sure they do well,’’ Azoba said.
In his remarks, Prof. Chiedo Akueshi, a retired professor of agronomy and consultant to the club, noted that trees produce oxygen needed to regenerate the atmosphere and mitigate global warming.
Akueshi urged everyone to plant a tree or two in their environment for healthier habitation.
Chief Instructor, Academics, at the school, Sqn. Ldr. Bukola Seweje, commended the club for choosing it for the project.
Seweje promised that the school would nurture and ensure that the trees grow to maturity to achieve the intended goal.
